BiographyZakhi was born in the thirteenth century in Mardin, son of Abraham, and studied at the Monastery of Mor Hananyo where he also became a monk. Zakhi was ordained metropolitan of Mardin and took the name Ignatius before he was consecrated as Patriarch of Mardin on 1 January 1293. In 1303, Ignatius issued ten canons at a council. As patriarch, Ignatius ordained twenty metropolitans and bishops before his death in 1332. WorksIgnatius is known to have written a treatise on the dimensions of church prayers as well as a thirty-page booklet called The Fundamentals in which he interprets the Syriac alphabet along spiritual themes, at the request of the monk Yusuf al-Kalshi.
