Military careerJones was commissioned into the Scots Guards in 1866.[1] He served in the Suakin Expedition in 1885. In the Second Boer War he commanded the Guards Brigade.[2] He was mentioned in despatches by Lord Kitchener dated 23 June 1902.[3] For his service in the war he was appointed a Companion of the Order of the Bath (CB) in the April 1901 South Africa Honours list (the award was dated to 29 November 1900;[4] he only received the actual decoration from King Edward VII at Buckingham Palace on 24 October 1902[5]). Following the end of the war in June 1902, Jones left Cape Town in the SS Carisbrook Castle in September 1902, arriving at Southampton early the following month.[6] He subsequently became Commanding Officer of the Scots Guards and went on to become General Officer Commanding the Troops in the Straits Settlements in 1905 before retiring in 1907.[7] He lived at Kelston Park, Somerset.[8] FamilyIn 1878 he married Alice Charlotte Matilda Dawson; they had three daughters.
