释义 |
HistoryInner Pierhead Fort was one of a number of forts and defence installations built to defend Portland Harbour and its naval base. Prior to its construction, tests on the strength of Portland stone compared with granite was conducted by the Army. Two butt walls were built, one in each stone type, and these were fired upon by HMS Blenheim. As Portland stone was stronger, it was selected as the building stone for the fort.[2][3] In 1892, it was reported that the battery was armed with eight 64-pounder guns, and by 1902, two 12-pounder quick-firing guns had been installed.[4] A 40 mm Bofors gun was added during World War II.[5] As the 20th-century progressed, the fort fell into disuse.[5] In 1996, HMNB Portland closed and Portland Port Ltd became the new owners of the harbour, which was transformed into a commercial port.[6] References1. ^{{NHLE|num=1203106|desc=|accessdate=28 September 2015}} {{coord|50.5691|N|2.4223|W|type:landmark_region:GB|display=title}}{{Isle of Portland}}2. ^{{cite book|last=Morris|first=Stuart|title=Dorset - The Royal Navy|year=2011|publisher=Dovecote Press|isbn=978-1904349884|pages=26, 27}} 3. ^{{cite book|last=Legg|first=Rodney|title=Portland Encyclopaedia|year=1999|publisher=Dorset Publishing Company|isbn=978-0948699566|page=101}} 4. ^{{PastScape|mnumber=1425459|mname=|accessdate=28 September 2015}} 5. ^1 {{cite book|last=Pomeroy|first=Colin A.|title=Military Dorset Today: Second World War Scenes and Settings That Can Still Be Seen 50 Years On|year=1995|publisher=Silver Link Publishing Ltd|isbn=978-1857940770|page=21}} 6. ^{{cite web|author=Will Bennet |url=https://www.independent.co.uk/news/portlands-naval-history-ends-as-last-warship-sails-1592621.html |title=Portland's naval history ends as last warship sails |publisher=The Independent |date= |accessdate=2017-10-23}} 4 : Isle of Portland|Forts in Dorset|Coastal artillery|Jurassic Coast |
