Isaac Haim Bitton (29 June 1779 – February 1838) was a Dutch Jewish bare-knuckle boxer who is most famous for a fight which lasted 74 rounds.

Life

Bitton was born in Amsterdam to a family of poor Jewish street hawkers. Due to a poor Dutch economy, he emigrated to London with his father at the age of ten.

Bitton's first encounter was with Tom Jones of Paddington, whom he met and defeated at Wimbledon, Surrey on 31 July 1801. This victory was followed by a drawn battle with George Maddox, which took place 13 December 1802, on the same spot, and was called off after seventy-four rounds. On 16 July 1804, on Willesden Green, Bitton fought a drawn battle with William Wood, a London coachman, interrupted in the thirty-sixth round by the appearance of officers from Bow Street. On 12 July 1807 Bitton fought in an exhibition bout against Bob Gregson at the Fives Court, St Martin's Street in Leicester Square.[1] On 16 November 1812 he assisted Jack Carter in his match against Jack Power.{{fact|date=April 2019}}

Soon after his last appearance as a principal, Bitton retired from the prize-ring, and established an athletic school on Goulston Street, Whitechapel, where he gave instruction in boxing and fencing. He was buried in the Jewish cemetery near Bethnal Green.{{fact|date=April 2019}}

He is an ancestor of the EastEnders actress June Brown and was featured on Who Do You Think You Are? in August 2011.[2][3]
