释义 |
Isabella Plantation is a woodland garden in Richmond Park in south west London. It is managed by The Royal Parks. Originally located in a boggy part of Richmond Park, it was labelled on a 1771 map as Isabell Slade. Slade, or sleyt, meant a bog or open space between woods and or banks, and isabel meant dirty or greyish brown, referring to the colour of the soil there.[1] The Isabella Plantation was established in the early 19th century when Lord Sidmouth, who was Deputy Ranger of Richmond Park and a former Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, fenced it as an area of woodland to keep the park's deer out.[2][3] After World War II it was transformed into a woodland garden. It is now organically run, resulting in a rich flora and fauna. Opened to the public in 1953,[4] it is now a major visitor attraction in its own right. In October 2012 it was reported that about 40 per cent of the Isabella Plantation is covered with Rhododendron ponticum, a non-native and invasive variety of rhododendron introduced by the Victorians, and that this would be removed over the next five years.[5] In 2014, improvements were made to the Plantation to incorporate new direction signs, wheelchair-accessible pathways and toilets and a new shelter and gazebo through a project funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund. The works also incorporated de-silting of all three ponds in the Plantation and establishing new waterfalls in the streams, funded by The Royal Parks with contributions from the Friends of Richmond Park.[6] References1. ^{{cite web |url=https://www.royalparks.org.uk/parks/richmond-park/richmond-park-attractions/isabella-plantation/history-of-the-isabella-plantation|title=History of the Isabella Plantation |author= |website=The Royal Parks|access-date= 24 April 2017}} 2. ^{{cite web | url=http://www.royalparks.org.uk/parks/richmond_park/landscape_history.cfm | title=Richmond Park: Landscape History | publisher=The Royal Parks | accessdate=7 October 2012}} 3. ^{{cite book | title=Palaces and Parks of Richmond and Kew | publisher=Phillimore & Co Ltd | author=John Cloake | year=1996 | pages=196|oclc=36045530 |ol=8627654M |isbn=9781860770234}} 4. ^{{cite book|title= The First 50 Years |url= http://www.frp.org.uk/pdf/frp/6_Final_50th_anniversary_booklet_full_copy.pdf|publisher= Friends of Richmond Park |year =2011|accessdate = 8 November 2012}} p.32 5. ^{{cite news | url=http://www.richmondandtwickenhamtimes.co.uk/news/9993868.Isabella_Plantation_facing_the_chop/ | title=Richmond Park's Isabella Plantation facing the chop | work=Richmond and Twickenham Times | date=18 October 2012 | accessdate=20 October 2012 | author=Patrick Grafton-Green | location=London}} 6. ^{{cite journal | title=Isabella Plantation | author=Ron Crompton and Michael Davison | journal=Friends of Richmond Park Newsletter |date=Autumn 2014 |page=12}} External links
