The island is uninhabited and is part of the Mulegé Municipality. BiologyIsla El Coyote has three species of reptiles: Phyllodactylus nocticolus (peninsular leaf-toed gecko), Sauromalus ater (common chuckwalla), and Urosaurus nigricaudus (black-tailed brush lizard).
