The island is uninhabited and is part of the Mexicali Municipality. BiologyIsla El Muerto has eight species of reptile, including two endemic species/subspecies, Crotalus muertensis (Isla El Muerto rattlesnake) and Uta lowei (dead side-blotched lizard).
