The Italy National Renewable Energy Action Plan is the National Renewable Energy Action Plan (NREAP) for Italy. The plan was commissioned by the Directive 2009/28/EC which required Member States of the European Union to notify the European Commission with a road map. The report describes how Italy plans to achieve its legally binding target of a 17% share of energy from renewable sources in gross final consumption of energy by 2020.

Main targets

The Italian national target for the share of renewable sources in gross final consumption of energy in 2020 is 17%. The expected total energy consumption in 2020 is 133,042 ktoe. The amount of energy from renewable sources in target year 2020 should be 22,617 ktoe. Italy's NREAP sets a target of the share of renewable energies to be 26,39% in the electricity sector, 17,09% in the heating/cooling sector and 10,14% in the transport sector by 2020.

Main incentives and laws

Italy is about to reduce the incentives for renewable energy (wind and solar) and authorization procedures will be streamlined, two important steps in the development of renewable energy sources in Italy.

Bioenergy

Tax credit for district heating using geothermal or biomass energy

Minimum quota for transport biofuel use

Support for the integration of biogas into the natural gas network (planned)
