{{notability|academics|date=June 2016}}Jacob L. Wright is an author, lecturer, and professor of religion specializing in the Hebrew Bible and Old Testament. His areas of expertise include the history and archeology of ancient Israel,[1] the composition history of the Bible, as well as warfare and nation-formation in the Ancient Near East. He is associate professor of Hebrew Bible at Emory University, Candler School of Theology.[2]

Born in Rockport, Massachusetts Wright studied internationally extensively. He received a Doctor Theologiae degree from the University of Göttingen in 2003 and went on to teach at Heidelberg University. He was awarded the National Endowment for the Humanities Fellowship for 2011-2012.[3]

He was the first biblical scholar to win this award in many years.

In addition to authoring many articles and editing volumes,[4] Wright's book Rebuilding Identity: The Nehemiah-Memoir and its Earliest Readers[5] was the 2008 winner of the Sir John Templeton Award for Theological Promise.

In 2013 he published the first monograph in the humanities as a fully enhanced ebook on King David (King David and His Reign Revisited) for Apple iBooks. It was featured in the Chronicle for Higher Education.[6] An expanded version of this book was published by Cambridge University Press: David, King of Israel, and Caleb in Biblical Memory. In 2015 it received a PROSE Awards honorable mention from the Association of American Publishers. In 2015 Wright's book was awarded the inaugural Nancy Lapp Popular Book Award of the American Schools of Oriental Research.[7]

In the summer of 2014 Wright taught a MOOC course, "The Bible's Prehistory, Purpose, and Political Future", through Coursera and Emory University to over 27,000 students.[8] It has received high reviews.[9]
