He can operate as a scrum-half or fly-half. He previously played for the Western Force and Brumbies Super Rugby. Stannard was an Australia sevens player and was awarded the 2010 Australian Sevens Player of the Year award.[1] He competed at the 2016 Summer Olympics.[2] Injury and retirementOn 30 March 2018, Stannard received a fractured skull in an altercation with a 23 year old English tourist, Sam Oliver. The two men had left a Sydney bar at 3am with the altercation ensuing outside a kebab shop. Stannard was knocked unconcious from a single punch during the incident and hit his head on the concrete floor. Following his head injury, Stannard has suffered from vertigo.[3] In June 2018, Stannard was forced to retire from playing rugby due to the head injuries he received in the altercation.[4] Sam Oliver claimed that he retaliated in self-defence after Stannard had approached him, made an offensive remark, and initially punched Oliver's left eye. In September 2018, following a two-and-a-half day hearing, Oliver was found not guilty of recklessly causing grievous bodily harm.[5] References1. ^{{Cite web |url=http://www.rugbywa.com.au/Team/EmiratesWesternForce/PlayerProfile/tabid/894/playerid/29/Default.aspx |title=Western Force Team |website=www.rugbywa.com.au |access-date=2016-09-03 |deadurl=yes |archiveurl=https://web.archive.org/web/20160821044810/http://www.rugbywa.com.au/Team/EmiratesWesternForce/PlayerProfile/tabid/894/playerid/29/Default.aspx |archivedate=21 August 2016 |df=dmy-all }} 2. ^{{Cite web |url=http://www.rugby.com.au/en/news/2016/07/13/22/38/sevens-olympic-team-announcement |title=Rio Olympics: Australian Sevens teams announced |last=Newman |first=Beth |date=14 July 2016 |website=www.rugby.com.au |publisher= |access-date=2016-09-03}} 3. ^{{cite web |last1=Mitchell |first1=Georgina |title=James Stannard still has vertigo months after 'king hit', court hears |url=https://www.smh.com.au/national/nsw/james-stannard-still-has-vertigo-months-after-king-hit-court-hears-20180910-p502s7.html |website=The Sydney Morning Herald |accessdate=12 September 2018 |language=en |date=10 September 2018}} 4. ^{{cite web |title=Injured sevens veteran Stannard retires |url=http://www.espn.co.uk/rugby/story/_/id/23808506/australian-sevens-veteran-james-stannard-forced-retire |website=ESPN.com |accessdate=12 September 2018 |language=en}} 5. ^{{cite web |title=James Stannard case: UK man found not guilty of assault on Australian former rugby sevens captain |url=https://www.theguardian.com/australia-news/2018/sep/12/james-stannard-case-uk-man-found-not-guilty-of-assault-on-australian-former-rugby-sevens-captain |website=The Guardian |accessdate=12 September 2018 |language=en}} External links
