Jeannette Chong-Aruldoss (张媛容) (born 1963) is a lawyer and opposition politician from Singapore. She is currently a member of the Singapore People's Party (SPP). She was previously a member of the National Solidarity Party (NSP) from 2011 to 2015 and served as the party's Secretary-General from October 2013 to January 2015.[1][2] Prior that, she was a member of the Reform Party from 2010 to 2011.

Career

Chong-Aruldoss began her legal career at Allen & Gledhill LLP. She then co-founded Archilex Law Corporation (a founding member of Mozaic Group Law Practice) in 2001.

Political career

Chong-Aruldoss joined the Reform Party in 2010, but resigned on 18 February 2011.[3]

In March 2011, Chong-Aruldoss joined the NSP.[4] She stood as a candidate for the party at the 2011 general election in the Mountbatten Single Member Constituency against Lim Biow Chuan of the governing People's Action Party (PAP). Chong-Aruldoss garnered 8,436 votes (41.35%) and was defeated by Lim who won 11,965 votes (58.64%).

Chong-Aruldoss was elected the Secretary-General of the NSP on 27 October 2013 following the resignation of the previous Secretary-General, Hazel Poa, who stood down due to health reasons.[5]

In January 2015, Chong-Aruldoss decided not to re-stand for the position of Secretary-General at the party's Central Executive Committee elections and instead challenged the incumbent, Sebastian Teo, for the position of President of the Party. However she was unsuccessful and Teo was re-elected as President while Tan Lam Siong was elected as Secretary-General.

In 2015, Chong-Aruldoss resigned from the NSP to join the SPP.[6]

At the 2015 general election, Chong-Aruldoss again stood in the single-member constituency of Mountbatten (this time as an SPP candidate) and again faced Lim Biow Chuan as the PAP candidate. Chong-Aruldoss took 5,992 votes (28.16%) with Lim taking 15,290 (71.84%).

Education

Chong-Aruldoss was educated at CHIJ Katong Convent, before going on to the University of Kent at Canterbury where she completed a bachelor's degree in Law in 1985. In 1987, she completed a Master's degree in Corporate & Commercial Law at the London School of Economics (LSE).

Chong-Aruldoss was called to the bar at Gray's Inn in 1986 and was admitted to the Singapore Bar in 1989.
