Jefferson Pinder’s work provokes commentary about race and struggle.{{according to whom|date=July 2018}} Focusing primarily with neon, found objects, and video, Pinder investigates identity through the most dynamic circumstances and materials. His work has been featured in numerous group and solo shows including exhibitions at The Studio Museum in Harlem, the Wadsworth Athenaeum Museum of Art in Hartford, Connecticut, Showroom Mama in Rotterdam, Netherlands, The Phillips Collection, and the National Portrait Gallery in Washington, D.C. CareerPinder has exhibited in galleries and museums including the High Museum; Birmingham Museum of Art;[1] the National Portrait Gallery in Washington, DC; the Studio Museum in Harlem; the Wadsworth Atheneum Museum of Art in Hartford, Connecticut; the Kentucky Museum of Art and Craft; and the Zacheta National Gallery in Warsaw, Poland, among others. Pinder’s work is in numerous public collections including Yale University Art Gallery,[2] the Studio Museum of Harlem,[3] the High Museum of Art, and the David C. Driskell Collection among many others. Jefferson Pinder has worked at University of Maryland as an assistant professor. Pinder is currently working as an associate professor at The School of The Art Institute of Chicago[4] and has lectured at the University of Massachusetts,[5] Amherst; College Arts Association; The Phillips Collection,[6] Washington, DC; Sudan University for Science & Technology, Khartoum, Sudan; the Black Film Center at Indiana University;[7] the Corcoran College of Art and Design; Maryland Institute College of Art; California College of the Arts; and American University, among others. Pinder exhibited at the 2016 Shanghai Biennale,[8] and at the new Smithsonian Museum of African American History and Culture.[9] In 2016, Pinder was awarded a USA Joyce Fellowship Award[10] in the field of performance and is a 2017 John S. Guggenheim Fellow.[11] EducationJefferson Pinder received an MFA from University of Maryland in painting and mixed media. He also earned a BA in Theatre at University of Maryland.
