Jessore, officially known as Jashore,^[1] {{lang-bn|যশোর }}) is a city in south-western Bangladesh. It is the capital of Jashore District. Jashore town consists of 9 wards and 73 mahalls. Jashore municipality was established in 1864.{{citation needed|date=August 2017}} The area of the town is 25.72 km². It has a population of 201,796 at the 2011 Census. The literacy rate among the townspeople is 56.57% in 1991. It is home to the Bangladesh Air Force base Matiur Rahman.^[2] It is near Bookbhora Oxbow Lake.^[2]

It is the birthplace of Sanatana Goswami (1488–1558) who was the principal disciple of Chaitanya Mahaprabhu.
