He got his law degree from the University of Indonesia (UI) in 1982, and then completed his master degree in 1987, and finished his doctorate degree in the same university, University of Indonesia in 1990. In 1998, Jimly Asshiddiqie became Professor of Constitutional Law at the Faculty of Law, University of Indonesia. Until now, he has published scientific books more than 60 titles and hundreds of papers, widely spread in various media and delivered in various forums. Many of new ideas, he shows in the books, as in "Green Constitution", "Economic Constitution", "Social Constitution", "Court of Ethics and Constitutional Ethics", "The Constitution of Cultures and Constitutional Cultures", and others. Now, he is the Vice Chairman of National Council of Titles and Honors. Before, he served as the chairman of the Advisory Council of the National Commission of Human Rights for 8 years (2009-2017); and Chairman of the Honorary Council of Electoral Officers (DKPP) since June 2012-2017 from the agency formerly known as the Council of the honor which he also led the Commission in 2009 and 2010, this DKPP he introduced as the first institution in the history of court of ethics, not only in Indonesia but also in the world. Previously he was also the founder and the first chief justice of the Constitutional Court of Indonesia, and was recognized as the father for judicial modernization in Indonesia. At the time of President Suharto, Jimly Asshiddiqie served as an Expert Staff or Advisor to the Minister of Education (1993–1998) and then was appointed Assistant to the Vice President BJ Habibie. At the time of President Abdurrahman Wahid and President Megawati, he again became a professor and appointed as the Advisor to the Minister of Industry and Trade (2001–2003), member of the Expert Committee Expert of the People's Assembly Working Body (2001–2002), and Expert Advisor to the Secretariat General of MPR in order to prepare the amendment of the 1945 Constitution (2002–2003).
