Jiří Weiss (29 March 1913 – 9 April 2004) was a film director and screenwriter born to a wealthy Jewish family in Prague. Weiss was born into the German-speaking Jewish community.[1]

Against the will of his father he began to shoot documentary and advertisement films in Czechoslovakia and later in England where he fled before the Germans and joined Czechoslovak units in RAF. After the war he returned to Prague and as director - screenwriter made many successful films such as Wolf Trap (1957) and Romeo, Juliet and Darkness (1959).

In 1968 he left Prague again after the Russian occupation and settled in the US. There he taught film at Hunter College, New York and in Santa Barbara.

After the Velvet Revolution he shot his last film again in his homeland, Martha and I (1991).
