He was Ban of Slavonia between 1270 and 1272 and from 1276 to 1277, and three times Master of the treasury between 1272 and 1275.{{sfn|Zsoldos|2011|p=317}} He was also ispán, or head, of many counties, including Baranya and Pozsony.{{sfn|Zsoldos|2011|p=317}} FamilyJoachim was a son of Stephen Gutkeled, Palatine of Hungary.{{sfn|Markó|2006|p=356}} In 1272, he captured Ladislaus, the son of and heir to Stephen V of Hungary.{{sfn|Engel|2001|p=107}} Joachim married Maria Romanovna, the daughter of Roman Danylovich, Prince of Halych and Gertrude von Babenberg.
