On April 6, 1951, she became the first woman to photograph herself giving birth.[1] She is a contributor of over 500,000 negatives from the 1940s to 2007 to the archives of the State Historical Society of Iowa and has been called Iowa's premier documentary photographer of the 20th century.[2] In 1996 she was inducted into the Iowa Women's Hall of Fame. She founded Penfield Books in 1979.
