O'Brien played his junior football for Essendon but was recruited from Williamstown. He was used as wingman and rover.[1] He won the award for Essendon's "best first year player" in 1932 but after two more seasons had to retire, due to work commitments.[2] He was the elder brother of North Melbourne captain Dally O'Brien.[3] References1. ^{{cite web|url=http://www.essendonfc.com.au/team/player-past.asp?id=694| title=O'Brien, John| publisher=Essendon Football Club official website}} {{DEFAULTSORT:OBrien, Jock}}{{AFL-bio-1900s-stub}}2. ^The Argus,"Essendons Losses", 15 March 1935, p. 13 3. ^{{cite book|last1=Holmesby|first1=Russell|last2=Main|first2=Jim|title=The Encyclopedia Of AFL Footballers| publisher=BAS Publishing|year=2007|isbn=978-1-920910-78-5}} 5 : 1909 births|Australian rules footballers from Victoria (Australia)|Essendon Football Club players|Williamstown Football Club players|1985 deaths |
