释义 |
He had been recruited by Julius Vogel for his great Public Works policy of the 1870s which emphasized railway construction and immigration. He had worked on railway construction in Canada, America, Russia, Mauritius and Egypt; and was Engineer-in Chief of the new Public Works Department, responsible for railway construction. He resigned in 1878 after the new minister (James Macandrew) effectively demoted him to having charge of the North Island only. He returned to England and became consulting engineer to the New Zealand Government.[2] References1. ^{{DNZB|title=John Carruthers|first= George|last= Mullenger|id=2c11|accessdate=23 April 2017}} {{Use dmy dates|date=April 2017}}{{authority control}}{{DEFAULTSORT:Carruthers, John}}{{NewZealand-bio-stub}}2. ^{{cite book |last= Noonan |first= Rosslyn J. |title= By Design: A brief history of the Public Works Department Ministry of Works 1870-1970 |accessdate= |edition= |origyear= |year= 1975 |publisher= Ministry of Works (Crown Copyright) |location= Wellington |isbn= |oclc= |page= |pages= 8–13 & 40–41 }} 12 : 1836 births|1914 deaths|New Zealand engineers|British civil engineers|Railway engineers|Scottish emigrants to New Zealand|New Zealand economists|People from Inverness|19th-century New Zealand engineers|Scottish engineers|19th-century British engineers|20th-century British engineers |
