He was an All-American college player at UCLA and represented the United States in the 1950 FIBA World Championship. Stanich graduated from Sacramento High School and attended hometown Sacramento City College. Stanich led the Panthers in scoring in both of his seasons there and as a sophomore in 1945–46 led the Panthers to the junior college national championship.[2] Following his junior college career, Stanich teamed with his younger brother George at UCLA.[3] As a senior in 1947–48, Stanich captained the Bruins squad and was named first team All-Conference[4] and an honorable mention All-American by the Associated Press.[5] Following the close of his college career, Stanich was drafted by the New York Knicks in the 1948 BAA draft. However, he chose to play for the Phillips Petroleum Company's Amateur Athletic Union (AAU) power Phillips 66ers. Stanich was named an AAU All-American in 1949 and won an AAU championship in 1950. After the season, Stanich moved to the Denver Chevrolets. Also in 1950, Stanich was named to the United States' team for the inaugural FIBA World Championships (now called the FIBA World Cup). The Americans lost 64–50 to host country Argentina. Stanich finished second on the team in scoring, averaging 7.2 points per game in the tournament, and was the lone American named to the all-tournament team.[6][7] References1. ^{{cite web| last = | first = | title = California Birth Index | work = | url = https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/V25Y-KLM | accessdate = September 20, 2014}} {{United States Squad 1950 FIBA World Championship}}{{1949 AAU Men's Basketball All-Americans}}{{DEFAULTSORT:Stanich, John}}2. ^{{cite web| last = | first = | title = Sacramento City College Court of Honor 2000 | work = | url = http://wserver.scc.losrios.edu/~physed/athletics/courtofhonor2000.htm | accessdate = September 20, 2014}} 3. ^{{cite web| last = Crowe | first = Jerry | title = John Wooden's first All-American at UCLA stood out in other arenas | work = Los Angeles Times | date = June 20, 2010 | url = http://articles.latimes.com/2010/jun/20/sports/la-sp-crowe-20100621 | accessdate = September 20, 2014}} 4. ^{{cite news|title=Hanger and Wolfe Named On All Stars|url=https://www.newspapers.com/image/60125596/?terms=|newspaper=Santa Cruz Sentinel|date=2 March 1948|page=4|via = Newspapers.com|accessdate = September 20, 2014}} {{Open access}} 5. ^{{cite news|title=Iowa's Murray Wier on 1st All-American|url=https://www.newspapers.com/image/383565/|newspaper=Mason City Globe-Gazette|date=11 March 1948|page=13|via = Newspapers.com|accessdate = September 20, 2014}} {{Open access}} 6. ^{{cite web| last = | first = | title = First World Championship - 1950 | work = USA Basketball | url = http://archive.usab.com/mens/national/mwc_1950.html | accessdate = September 20, 2014}} 7. ^{{cite news|title=Argentina Cops World's Amateur Hardwood Crown|url=https://www.newspapers.com/image/70630514/?terms=|newspaper=The Pantagraph|date= 5 November 1950 |page=27|via = Newspapers.com|accessdate = September 20, 2014}} {{Open access}} 14 : 1925 births|Living people|American men's basketball players|American people of Croatian descent|Basketball players from California|Forwards (basketball)|Guards (basketball)|Junior college men's basketball players in the United States|New York Knicks draft picks|Phillips 66ers players|Sacramento City College alumni|Sportspeople from Sacramento, California|UCLA Bruins men's basketball players|United States men's national basketball team players |
