He is also currently a member of Clube de Regatas do Flamengo, a famous sport club in Rio de Janeiro. Schlittler represented Brazil at the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing, where he competed for the men's heavyweight class (+100 kg). He reached only into the quarterfinal round, where he lost by an automatic ippon to Cuba's Óscar Brayson, who also defeated him in the gold medal match at the Pan American Games.[4] Because his opponent advanced further into the final match, Schlittler offered another shot for the bronze medal by defeating Lebanon's Rudy Hachache, with a tate shiho gatame (seven mat holds) and an ippon, in the repechage bout.[5] Unfortunately, he finished only in seventh place, after losing out the final repechage bout to six-foot and eight-inch tall French judoka Teddy Riner, who successfully scored an ippon in more than a minute.[6] References1. ^{{cite sports-reference|João Schlittler|https://www.sports-reference.com/olympics/athletes/sc/joao-schlittler-1.html|7 December 2012}} 2. ^{{cite news|title=Pan Am Games Roundup: Cuba wins first major team title at Pan American Games|url=http://english.people.com.cn/90001/90779/6220133.html|publisher=People's Daily Online (China)|date=20 July 2007|accessdate=7 December 2012}} 3. ^{{cite news|title=GB success seals Olympic berths|url=http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport2/hi/olympics/judo/6994468.stm|publisher=BBC Sport|date=15 September 2007|accessdate=7 December 2012}} 4. ^{{cite web|title=Men's Heavyweight (+100kg/+220 lbs) Preliminaries|url=http://www.2008.nbcolympics.com/judo/resultsandschedules/rsc=JUM200304/index.html|publisher=NBC Olympics|accessdate=7 December 2012}} 5. ^{{cite web|title=Men's Heavyweight (+100kg/+220 lbs) Repechage|url=http://www.2008.nbcolympics.com/judo/resultsandschedules/rsc=JUM200454/index.html|publisher=NBC Olympics|accessdate=7 December 2012}} 6. ^{{cite web|title=Men's Heavyweight (+100kg/+220 lbs) Final of Repechage B|url=http://www.2008.nbcolympics.com/judo/resultsandschedules/rsc=JUM200352/index.html|publisher=NBC Olympics|accessdate=7 December 2012}} External links
