He has been a Member of Parliament for Mwanga constituency since 2000.[1] Minister of Natural Resources and Tourism – 2015 to presentAt the beginning of his appointment, Jumanne Maghembe called for a focus on illegal logging and wildlife poaching,[2] as well as working towards doubling tourism’s contribution to Tanzania’s economy.[3] Political careerBefore his current position, Professor Maghembe’s was serving as Minister of Water and Irrigation, beginning in February 2012 and ending in November 2015.[4] Green Mile ControversyIn 2016, Maghembe faced international controversy after allowing a company he knew committed dozens of wildlife crimes back into Tanzania. The company - Green Mile Safari from the United Arab Emirates - had been kicked out of Tanzania after their own promotional video showed animal torture and repeated violations of Tanzania law. Maghembe's decision to let the company back in was widely assumed in news reports to be based on his acceptance of a bribe from Green Mile. One international observer and wildlife activist said, "I don’t doubt there’s a substantial amount of money for the ministers involved." [5] Education and AcademiaIn 1975, Maghembe graduated with a degree in Forestry from the University of Dar es Salaam.
