One of Ireland's most respected commentators on politics and culture, she is Adjunct Professor of Journalism at the University of Limerick.[1] She often appeared on Tonight with Vincent Browne. She is the author of Mary McAleese: The Outsider,[2] about the eighth President of Ireland, and Deep Deception: Ireland's Swimming Scandals,[3] praised by Pat Kenny and Joe Duffy and described by Fintan O'Toole as "the best of the large crop of books by Irish journalists this year, it grows beyond its immediate subject to become a terrifying anatomy of the capacity for denial and vilification within any enclosed world".[4][5] In October 2010, Kevin Myers criticised her for an article she wrote concerning John Waters, describing it as "the very quintessence of the feminist narrative".[6] In August 2011, David Quinn, founder of the Catholic think tank Iona Institute, objected to McCarthy's Sunday Time's column critiquing his conservative agenda.[7] She won the 2012 NNI Journalism Awards honour in category Columnist of the Year.[8] References1. ^{{cite news|first=Roy|last=Greenslade|url=https://www.theguardian.com/media/greenslade/2012/aug/15/journalism-education-ireland|title=Irish journalists become professors|newspaper=The Guardian|publisher=Guardian Media Group|date=15 August 2012|accessdate=15 August 2012}} {{Use dmy dates|date=August 2016}}{{authority control}}{{DEFAULTSORT:Mccarthy, Justine}}2. ^{{cite book|first=Justine|last=McCarthy|title=Mary McAleese: The Outsider|publisher=Blackwater Press|year=1999}} ({{ISBN|1841314412}} {{ISBN|978-1841314419}}) 3. ^{{cite web|url=http://www.obrien.ie/book808.cfm|title=Deep Deception: Ireland's Swimming Scandals|publisher=O'Brien Press|year=2009}} ({{ISBN|1-84717-204-0}} {{ISBN|978-1-84717-204-4}}) 4. ^{{cite web|url=http://www.obrien.ie/author.cfm?authorid=332|title=Justine McCarthy|work=O'Brien Press}} 5. ^{{cite news|first=John|last=Watterson|url=http://www.irishtimes.com/newspaper/opinion/2009/1021/1224257147379.html|title=Criminal abuse of child swimmers laid bare|newspaper=The Irish Times|publisher=Irish Times Trust}} 6. ^{{cite news|first=Kevin|last=Myers|authorlink=Kevin Myers|url=http://www.independent.ie/opinion/columnists/kevin-myers/kevin-myers-lets-honour-brave-women-but-please-stick-to-the-facts-2393977.html|title='Let's honour brave women but please stick to the facts'|newspaper=Irish Independent|publisher=Independent News & Media|date=26 October 2010|accessdate=26 October 2010}} 7. ^{{cite news|first=David |last=Quinn |authorlink=David Quinn (Irish journalist) |url=http://www.irishcatholic.ie/content/justine-mccarthys-caricature-social-conservatives-david-quinn |title=Justine McCarthy's caricature of `social conservatives': David Quinn defends his agenda from a narrow interpretation |newspaper=The Irish Catholic |publisher=Catholic Church |date=18 August 2011 |accessdate=18 August 2011 }}{{dead link|date=April 2017 |bot=InternetArchiveBot |fix-attempted=yes }} 8. ^{{cite web | url=http://nni.ie/nni-national-journalist-of-the-year-award-goes-to-irish-independent-team/ | title=2012 NNI Journalism Awards | publisher=National Newspapers of Ireland | accessdate=19 October 2014}} 9 : Year of birth missing (living people)|Living people|Irish non-fiction writers|Irish political writers|Irish women journalists|20th-century Irish women writers|21st-century Irish women writers|Academics of the University of Limerick|People from County Cork |
