The book takes the reader along with 'Sethu Madhavan', the protagonist, through a journey across time (Kaalam).[1]

Synopsis

The story is set during the early 1960s amidst the backdrop of land reforms and the poverty of Kerala. Sethu Madhavan a member of a joint family in Valluvanad. He finally realises the worthlessness of achievements and understands that life is put at the mercy of time.

He meets three women in different moments and they each make deep impacts on him. He has to part from all of them and is left to a solitary struggle of abandonment. The first woman is Sumitra, his cousin. This relationship is portrayed as a teenager's fancy. Next is Thankamani whom he wishes to make his life partner. His inability to acquire a good job deters him. He gets and loses a low profile government job as a Village Extension Officer, loses it over problems with higher officials.

He then becomes a clerk at the firm of Sreenivasan Muthalaly in a faraway coastal city. There he meets Lalitha Sreenivasan, his boss' wife. She is leading a loveless exisitence due to her husband's neglect. A strong relationship is seen growing between Lalitha and Sethu. As a trustworthy employee, Sethu takes on bigger responsibilities. Sreenivasan falls ill due to a stroke and learns of the relationship between his employee and his wife. Sethu parts ways with Sreenivasan, Lalitha divorces him and they begin a new life. During this period, he keeps away from his parents and other relatives. After a small domestic fight, he plans a visit to his village. Sethu is in a state of inner conflict. He learns that Thankamani lives in Bombay with her kids. There he finds her in an abandoned state, but she declares she is happy living alone. She turns down his request of help saying that Sethu has no compassion for anyone but himself. The novel ends as Sethu returns to Lalitha.

  • The author was awarded the Sahitya Academy Award for the work in 1970.[2]
