It is located in the north of the krai, and borders with Tungokochensky District in the south. The area of the district is {{convert|56800|km2|sp=us}}.[2] Its administrative center is the rural locality (a selo) of Chara.[3] Population: {{ru-census2010|9,051|;}} 9,785 (2002 Census);[5] {{su-census1989|20,942|.}} The population of Chara accounts for 21.0% of the district's total population.
