A Roman Catholic nun, she is a member of the Sisters of Providence of Saint Mary-of-the-Woods. BiographyDesautels has worked for 8th Day Center for Justice in Chicago, Illinois for over 25 years, focusing on issues of human rights, women in the church, institutional power, and peace.[1] Previously she ministered as an elementary school teacher, a prison chaplain and a pastoral associate.[2] Desautels attended Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College[3] and went on to receive a Masters in religious studies from La Salle University.[1] She joined the Sisters of Providence in 1960 and became a fully professed sister in 1968.[2] For her work as a prominent activist, Desautels has been profiled by Rolling Stone[4] and the Chicago Tribune,[5] among others. She was also featured in the 2012 documentary Band of Sisters, directed and produced by Mary Fishman.[6] Desautels has been arrested numerous times for acts of non-violent civil disobedience. In the early 1990s she was involved with labor movement protests during the A. E. Staley Lockout and was arrested twice.[7][8] In November 2001 Desautels, dressed in a funeral shroud and carrying a symbolic foam coffin,[9] trespassed onto federal property at Fort Benning outside Columbus, Georgia as part of a protest against the US Army School of the Americas. As a result, Desautels served a six-month prison sentence as a "prisoner of conscience".[10] See also{{portal bar|Biography|Catholicism|Illinois}}References1. ^1 {{cite web | url=http://www.8thdaycenter.org/staff | title=Staff and Volunteers | publisher=8th Day Center for Justice | accessdate=27 March 2014}} {{DEFAULTSORT:Desautels, Kathleen}}2. ^1 {{cite web | url=http://spsmw.org/2012/05/27/sister-kathleen-desautels-featured-in-chicago-tribune/ | title=Sister Kathleen Desautels featured in Chicago Tribune | publisher=Sisters of Providence | date=27 May 2012 | accessdate=27 March 2014 | author=Cox, Dave}} 3. ^{{cite news | url=https://www.newspapers.com/clip/4503136/fatherdaughter_event_under_way_at_st/ | title=Father-Daughter Event Under Way At St. Mary's | work=The Terre Haute Tribune | date=16 Apr 1959 | accessdate=3 March 2016 | location=Terre Haute, Indiana | pages=18 | via = Newspapers.com}}{{Open access}} 4. ^{{cite news | url=https://www.rollingstone.com/culture/news/the-sisters-crusade-20130228 | title=The Sisters Crusade | work=Rolling Stone | date=22 November 2012 | accessdate=27 March 2014 | author=Binelli, Mark}} 5. ^{{cite news | url=http://articles.chicagotribune.com/2012-05-21/news/ct-met-trice-peace-guide-nato-0521-20120521_1_protest-8th-day-center-peace | title=At NATO protest, it's clear Catholic nun is a powerhouse in the peace movement | work=Chicago Tribune | date=21 May 2012 | accessdate=27 March 2014 | author=Trice, Dawn Turner | location=Chicago}} 6. ^{{cite web | url=http://www.bandofsistersmovie.com/sisters/kathleen-desautels | title=Kathleen Desautels | publisher=Band of Sisters | accessdate=27 March 2014}} 7. ^{{cite book | title=Staley: The Fight for a New American Labor Movement | publisher=University of Illinois | author=Ashby, Steven K. and C.
