After separation of the Ellice Islands (now Tuvalu), and independence, athletes from now Kiribati attended the 1979 South Pacific Games for the first time.[7] and the Micronesian Games in 1998.[8] The official foundation of KAA occurred in 1999, and its affiliation to the IAAF in the same year.[9] Mwaereiti Burennatu was elected new president of KAA in 2000.[10] In April 2005, Simon Burennatu was elected president.[11] He was followed by Tierata Taukaban. In July 2009, he was replaced by Arobati Brechtefeld[12] who served until 2012. Current president is Tonana George.[1][2] Affiliations
