The project site is located about {{Convert|39|km|mi|abbr=on}} north of Dakpathar and upstream of the Ichari Dam. The primary purpose of the dam is power generation and downstream water supply. It will support a 660 MW power station and provide water for the irrigation of {{Convert|97076|ha|acre|abbr=on}} of crops. After years of negotiations over water-sharing between the two states, the dam is currently awaiting clearance from the Ministry of Environment and Forests.
