Laird Stirling (born August 22, 1938) is a Canadian politician. He represented the electoral district of Dartmouth North in the Nova Scotia House of Assembly from 1978 to 1988. He is a member of the Nova Scotia Progressive Conservative Party.[1] Stirling was born in Noranda, Quebec. He attended the Atlantic School of Theology and McMaster University. He is a minister and has also worked as a hospital chaplain. He is married to Carolyn Wilson.[2] Stirling entered provincial politics in the 1978 election, defeating Liberal cabinet minister Glen Bagnell by over 1,600 votes in Dartmouth North.[3] In June 1979, Stirling was appointed to the Executive Council of Nova Scotia as Minister of Social Services.[2][4] He was re-elected in the 1981 election,[5] and was moved to Minister of Consumer Affairs in December 1981.[6][7] Following his re-election in 1984,[8] Stirling continued to serve as Minister of Cumsumer Affairs until February 1987, when he was moved to Minister of Environment.[9] In November 1987, Stirling was shuffled again, becoming Minister of Municipal Affairs.[10][11] He was defeated when he ran for re-election in 1988, losing to Liberal Sandy Jolly by 121 votes.[12][13] References1. ^{{cite web|url=http://nslegislature.ca/pdfs/about/ConstituencyHistories/dartmouth%20north.pdf|title=Electoral History for Dartmouth North|publisher=Nova Scotia Legislative Library|accessdate=2014-11-14}} {{DEFAULTSORT:Stirling, Laird}}2. ^1 {{cite book|last1=Elliott|first1=Shirley B.|title=The Legislative Assembly of Nova Scotia, 1758–1983 : a biographical directory|url=http://0-nsleg-edeposit.gov.ns.ca.legcat.gov.ns.ca/deposit/b10537582.pdf|accessdate=2018-05-15|year=1984|publisher=Public Archives of Nova Scotia|isbn=0-88871-050-X|page=215}} 3. ^{{cite web|url=http://electionsnovascotia.ca/sites/default/files/General%20Election%201978.pdf|title=Returns of General Election for the House of Assembly 1978|publisher=Elections Nova Scotia|year=1978|page=57|accessdate=2015-03-14}} 4. ^{{cite news|title=Called out of control, Government of N.S. gets radical surgery|work=The Globe and Mail|date=June 23, 1979}} 5. ^{{cite web|url=http://electionsnovascotia.ca/sites/default/files/General%20Election%201981.pdf |title=Returns of General Election for the House of Assembly 1981 |publisher=Elections Nova Scotia |year=1981 |page=61 |accessdate=2015-03-14 |deadurl=yes |archiveurl=https://www.webcitation.org/6NyXliAKc?url=http://electionsnovascotia.ca/sites/default/files/General |archivedate=2014-03-10 |df= }} 6. ^{{cite web|url=https://news.google.com/newspapers?nid=1946&dat=19811211&id=disiAAAAIBAJ&sjid=KaUFAAAAIBAJ&pg=909,399916|title=9 Nova Scotia ministers moved to new portfolios|work=The Montreal Gazette|publisher=news.google.com|date=December 11, 1981|accessdate=2015-03-15}} 7. ^{{cite news|title=Nine N.S. ministers change titles|work=The Globe and Mail|date=December 12, 1981}} 8. ^{{cite web|url=http://electionsnovascotia.ca/sites/default/files/General%20Election%201984.pdf |title=Returns of General Election for the House of Assembly 1984 |publisher=Elections Nova Scotia |year=1984 |page=63 |accessdate=2015-03-14 |deadurl=yes |archiveurl=https://web.archive.org/web/20131005021932/http://electionsnovascotia.ca/sites/default/files/General%20Election%201984.pdf |archivedate=2013-10-05 |df= }} 9. ^{{cite news|title=N.S. attorney-general gets less-prominent job|work=The Globe and Mail|date=February 5, 1987}} 10. ^{{cite news|title=Buchanan shuffles his cabinet|work=The Globe and Mail|date=November 25, 1987}} 11. ^{{cite news|title=Shuffle seen as move to help ministers|work=The Globe and Mail|date=November 26, 1987}} 12. ^{{cite web|url=http://electionsnovascotia.ca/sites/default/files/General%20Election%201988.pdf |title=Returns of General Election for the House of Assembly 1988 |publisher=Elections Nova Scotia |year=1988 |page=65 |accessdate=2015-03-14 |deadurl=yes |archiveurl=https://web.archive.org/web/20140512225642/http://electionsnovascotia.ca/sites/default/files/General%20Election%201988.pdf |archivedate=2014-05-12 |df= }} 13. ^{{cite news|title=Nova Scotia Tories win thin majority|work=The Globe and Mail|date=September 7, 1988}} 7 : 1938 births|Living people|Progressive Conservative Association of Nova Scotia MLAs|Members of the Executive Council of Nova Scotia|People from Dartmouth, Nova Scotia|People from Rouyn-Noranda|McMaster University alumni |
