The locality is on the Murray Valley Highway, {{convert|233|km|mi}} north of the state capital, Melbourne. Moodemere is believed to be an Aboriginal word for ‘water hole that never dries up’.[1] The lake is host to the Lake Moodemere rowing regatta each year in January. It is the oldest continually run regatta in Australia with the first event held in 1863.[2] References1. ^Rutherglen Wine Experience {{webarchive|url=https://web.archive.org/web/20130411000933/http://www.rutherglenvic.com/visitorinfo/visitorinfo_content.asp?visitorinfoID=17 |date=2013-04-11 }} 2. ^History of Murray Rowing Association © Andrew Guerin – 2004-2013
