He was elected to the Lok Sabha, lower house of the Parliament of India from Jaipur Rural, Rajasthan in 2009.He was the Union Minister for state for Defence and later for Rural Development in the Second Manmohan Singh ministry. He has also been elected as the Member of Rajasthan Legislative Assembly from Amer Constituency in 2003.
