The headwaters of the river rise in the Bailey Range, approximately 20 km south of Halls Creek; the river then flows in a south-westerly direction crossing the Great Northern Highway near Dillinger Bore before discharging into the Mary River of which it is a tributary. The river was named in 1884 by government surveyor George Russell Turner, of the 1884 Kimberley Survey Expedition, who possibly named it after Laura Louise Forrest (1877-1960), the niece of Surveyor General John Forrest.[2][3] References1. ^{{cite web|url=http://maps.bonzle.com/c/a?a=p&cmd=sp&p=211094&st=&s=laura%20river|title=Bonzle Digital Atlas - Map of Laura River, WA|year= 2011|accessdate= 10 July 2016}} {{coord|18|41|43|S|127|01|06|E|type:river_region:AU-WA|display=title}}{{Rivers of Western Australia}}{{WesternAustralia-river-stub}}2. ^1 {{LandInfo WA|r|L|2 September 2011}} 3. ^{{cite news |url=http://nla.gov.au/nla.news-article3003011 |title=Survey of the Eucla district |work=The West Australian |date=13 October 1885 |page=3 |accessdate=11 July 2014 }} 1 : Rivers of the Kimberley region of Western Australia |
