He played college football for the Penn State Nittany Lions football team and was selected by both the Newspaper Enterprise Association and Liberty magazine as a first-team center on the 1940 College Football All-America Team. After graduating in 1940, Gajecki was drafted by the Pittsburgh Steelers.
