Leuconotopicus is a genus of woodpeckers in the family Picidae native to North and South America. Species in this genus were previously assigned to Picoides.^[1]^[2] Some taxonomic authorities, including the American Ornithological Society, continue to place the entire group there.

The name of the genus was introduced by the French ornithologist Alfred Malherbe in 1845.^[3] The word Leuconotopicus is from the Greek leukos meaning white, nōton back and pikos woodpecker.^[4]
