The Light of Christ Catholic Elementary and Junior High School is a part of the Calgary Separate School District and the Calgary Catholic School District in Calgary, Alberta, Canada. The school was built in 2009 and opened in 2010.

History

Opening in 2010, the school initially began with grades K to 8 due to Alberta's high school grades spanning from grades 9 to 12 and was reduced to grades 10 to 12 by 2011. By September 2011 in all district schools, grade 9 was established for the eighth grade students who had attended of the previous year. By 2012, Light of Christ became the designated junior high school for Our Lady of Fatima Elementary school students due to St. Rose of Lima Jr. High becoming a French immersion school. Our Lady of Fatima students at Light of Christ were also given the option of transferring to St. Rose of Lima for grade 8 and 9 for the regular English program by 2014.

In 2014, the designated junior high school high for Our Lady of Fatima students was changed from Light of Christ to St. John XXIII due to limited space. In 2016, classes for Our Lady of Fatima to attend junior high became optional among the original school's accommodations, therefore, classes will undergo a smaller portion of what once was back in 2013, and Our Lady of Fatima students had the option of the original mandatory school, St. Rose of Lima.

Rooms and classes

The school has over 20 classrooms, and features work rooms, a workshop, art room, music room, auxiliary gym, gym, office, infirmary, lounge, cooking/fashion classroom, and the replacement of the library into the Learning Commons area. The school has a second floor mostly for Junior High classes and extra storage use. Joint-grade classes are sometimes used.

Junior high options & intramural and extracurricular activities

The junior high students from grade 7 to 9 have options and extracurricular activities for enjoyment and preparation for high school. The list of options are:[1]

OptionYears of ActivityDiscontinued
Band (recalled to Instrumental Music) 2010–Present N/A
Art 2010–Present N/A
Drama 2010-2013,

2015-2016

2013 June, re-continued

in 2015, ended in 2016

Recreation Leadership (Also known as Sports Performance) 2013 Sept.- 2016 2016
Film Studies 2013 Sept.- 2016 2016
Computers (Technological Programming) 2013 Sept.- 2016 2016
Recreation Leadership2016–PresentN/A

Owing to the school's large intake of junior high students in 2013, the number of options had also increased, however, this required the cancellation of drama. However, in 2015, drama continued but rather as an extracurricular activity and as a part of elementary students for their own purposes. With the junior high population decreasing in 2016, several teachers relocated or transfer to different schools which lead to options having been reverted to the original three options of band, called instrumental music, recreational leadership, and art. Sports performance has been renamed recreational leadership with several differences in the curriculum and a higher emphasis on leadership and coaching skills.

Students have a choice to sign up for various athletic teams or extracurricular clubs throughout the school year. Below is a list of some that have been offered in previous years:

OptionYear round
Sports Year round
P.H.A.T Team Year round (Now as part of Leadership Team)
Leadership Year round
Film Studies Year round (2012-2013, considered as option)
Talent Show Per semester (One in December/One in June)
Gamers Club Year round (2010 only, no longer available)
Drama More of an Elementary Idea, but can be an extra randomly throughout the year

A large part of school pride is being well-represented in athletics, having been well-decorated in everything from badminton to the Spirit Award for Track and Field in 2013. Team tryouts for a variety of sports occur at different points throughout the school year. Teams last for a season rather than all year due to the numerous commitments students are expected to make to both the team and their schoolwork. Here is the list:

Sport/AthleticMonth Normally StartsMonth Normally Ends
Cross Country RunningEarly SeptemberLate September
VolleyballOctoberNovember
BasketballDecemberEarly February
BadmintonFebruaryMid April
Track & FieldMayJune

Sports such as volleyball, basketball, and badminton have teams divided for girls and boys, seniors and juniors. Cross-country running requires students to be able to achieve a certain distance within a time limit to be accepted to the team. For the track portion of track and field, students are selected using the aforementioned method whereas the field portion is an all inclusive team sport.

Designated high school

During their second semester, grade 9 students choose their high school for the upcoming year. Mainly done during their health classes, they are exposed to the life of high school, planning for it, choosing their courses for grade 10, and as well getting a feel for their upcoming new school. A large majority of students attend Bishop McNally High School or certain schools offering various programs of study (recommended of Father Lacombe or Bishop Carroll. In the near future, as the Calgary Catholic School District continues to expand in their new schools in new communities in Calgary, there is a possibility that a new high school is in the works, as the district has been funding and planning more schools by late 2016. As of February 2017, there still has not been a new announcement.{{update needed|date=April 2019}}
