In cricket, a five-wicket haul (also known as a "five–for" or "fifer")[1] refers to a bowler taking five or more wickets in a single innings. Described as a "notable" achievement by author M.A. Pervez,{{Sfn|Pervez|2001|p=31}} there have been only 11 instances of a bowler taking a five-wicket haul in the Asia Cup tournaments.[2] The Asia Cup is a One Day International (ODI) tournament organised by the Asian Cricket Council,[3] a subordinate of the International Cricket Council (ICC).[4] Originally started as a biennial tournament in 1984, it has since been organised 12 times as of the latest edition in 2014.{{efn|name=1993cup|The 1993 edition which was scheduled to be played in Pakistan, and the 2006 tournament scheduled to be held in India were cancelled.[5]}}

The first five-wicket haul in the tournament was taken by India's Arshad Ayub in the 1988 tournament, against Pakistan, when he took 5 wickets for 21 runs. No five-wicket hauls were taken in the 1990–91 tournament. In 1995, Aaqib Javed took 5 wickets for 19 runs against India.[2] These two bowling performances feature in the "Top 100 ODI bowling performances of all time", a list compiled and released by the Wisden Cricketers' Almanack in 2002.[6] No five-wicket hauls were taken in the 2000 and 2004 tournaments.[2]

The Sri Lankans lead the list with seven five-wicket hauls—Ajantha Mendis and Lasith Malinga are the only bowlers to take more than one five-wicket haul in the tournament.[7] The former has taken two, both in 2008, while the latter has three five-wicket hauls—one in the 2010 tournament and two in 2014. Mendis' 6 wickets for 13 runs against India in the final of the 2008 is the best by any bowler across the tournament's history. The most recent five-wicket haul was taken by Malinga, who took 5 wickets for 56 runs against Pakistan in the final of the 2014 tournament.[7]
