It was founded in 1983 by Dr. Teresa de Dios Unanue and Colonel Ramón M. Barquín. AUC is one of the only universities in the Caribbean specializing in digital arts education in all of its forms. Until 2014, Atlantic University College was also the only university in Puerto Rico to be awarded an Emmy award for Technical Achievement in 2007,[1] an Emmy Award in 2012[2] and nominated for three Emmy awards in 2011.[3] HistoryAtlantic University College is a non for-profit institution and is located in the heart of Guaynabo, facing the city's central plaza. It is the first university founded in Guaynabo and is located in the city's historical district, which preserves the distinctive Spanish colonial-style architecture that characterized Puerto Rico's towns and cities in earlier times. Atlantic University College was founded in response to Guaynabo's need for a local institution of higher education, as well as the growing demand for digital arts expertise in the commercial sector. AUC's core programs were first offered in 1983 and now include a growing range of bachelor's and master's degree programs. Accreditation and licensingAtlantic University College was formerly accredited as an "Honor Roll Institution with Distinction" by the Accrediting Council for Independent Colleges and Schools (ACICS).[4] It formerly had the authorization to award associate, bachelor's, and master's degrees.
