The Longwood plantation was started around 1780 for Gustavius Warfield.[1] Warfield would keep patients in a loft above his office if they were unfit to travel. It feature numerous outbuildings and a smokehouse and a gravesite for family and slaves. The manor is built on a land grant named Ridgley's great park, on a section he inherited from his father's Bushy Park estate.[2] The graveyard for slaves is situated to the south of the building.[3] In 1860, Robert E. Lee visited Longwood before the war to visit his wife's first cousin George Washington Parke Custis Peter. He returned to visit in July 1870 after the war.[4] See also
