It is a listed historical monument since 1886.[1] The edifice dates to the 11th and 12th century. It takes its name from the fifth century San Parteo, a saint of regional renown. San Parteo Church lies near the Roman town of Mariana, about {{convert|550|m}} to the west of the Church of Santa Maria Assunta (La Canonica).[2][3] The church is described as having a "grandly sober style".[4] It is built over a pagan cemetery and its lintel is said to be "decorated with a Middle Eastern motif; two lions guarding what is believed to be the Tree of Science in the Garden of Eden."[5] References1. ^{{Base Mérimée|PA00099207}} Chapelle de San-Perteo {{DEFAULTSORT:Parteo Corsica}}{{France-church-stub}}2. ^{{cite book|title=The Rough Guide to France|url=https://books.google.com/books?id=vJVhk74uT6IC&pg=PA979|accessdate=27 October 2011|date=1 April 2011|publisher=Rough Guides Ltd|isbn=978-1-84836-724-1|page=979}} 3. ^{{cite book |last=Delpal |first=Jacques Louis|title=France: a Phaidon cultural guide : with over 800 color illustrations and 20 pages of maps|url=https://books.google.com/books?id=EacUAQAAIAAJ|accessdate=27 October 2011 |date=1 January 1985 |publisher=Prentice-Hall |page=221}} 4. ^{{cite book|last=Huxley|first=Michael|title=The Geographical magazine|url=https://books.google.com/books?id=2iFJAQAAIAAJ|accessdate=27 October 2011|year=1959|publisher=Geographical Press|page=475}} 5. ^{{cite book |last1=Facaros |first1=Dana |last2=Pauls |first2=Michael |title=Corsica |url=https://books.google.com/books?id=VlmBrEPftAQC&pg=PA220|accessdate=27 October 2011 |date=15 April 2008 |publisher=New Holland Publishers |isbn=978-1-86011-390-1|page=220}} 4 : 11th-century Roman Catholic church buildings|12th-century churches|Churches in Corsica|Buildings and structures in Haute-Corse |
