The Lodge was built about 1915 by local black farmers. Their organization provided insurance, advice, and burial assistance to members, and the structure was the headquarters for the outfit. In 1953, a new pavilion opened at nearby Mosquito Beach, and the Lodge fell into disuse. In 2007, the Lodge had been vacant for a decade and was in near ruinous condition. The Town of James Island agreed to contribute $50,000 toward the restoration of the building.[2] In 2009, a restoration of the Lodge was undertaken at a cost of about $100,000 including the recreation of a missing porch.[3] The Lodge was added to the National Register on October 3, 2007 as a significant illustration of the importance of fraternal orders in the cultural life of the lowcountry African-American community in the early twentieth century. In 1915, the Lodge members built a two-story building on land belonging to Henry Wallace, a member. The Lodge has a lateral gable roof of raised-seam tin with exposed rafters, wood clapboarding, concrete piers, and windows with wooden full-panel shutters as simple openings.[4] References1. ^{{NRISref|version=2010a}} {{National Register of Historic Places in South Carolina}}{{DEFAULTSORT:Seashore Farmers' Lodge No. 767}}{{CharlestonCountySC-NRHP-stub}}2. ^{{cite news|title=Seashore Farmers' Lodge an endangered ruin|newspaper=Charleston Post & Courier|date=July 14, 2008|author=Robert Behre|page=B1}} 3. ^{{cite news|title=A Sea Island gem|url=http://www.postandcourier.com/article/20090917/ARCHIVES/309179835|accessdate=Dec 4, 2012|newspaper=Charleston Post & Courier|date=Sep 17, 2009|author=Edward Fennell}} 4. ^{{cite web|title=Seashore Farmers' Lodge No. 767, Charleston County|url=http://www.nationalregister.sc.gov/charleston/S10817710181/index.htm|work=National Register Properties in South Carolina|publisher=South Carolina Department of Archives and History|accessdate=Dec 4, 2012}} 4 : National Register of Historic Places in Charleston County, South Carolina|Buildings and structures in Charleston County, South Carolina|Buildings and structures completed in 1915|Clubhouses on the National Register of Historic Places in South Carolina |
