The website serves as a platform connecting guests from around the world with accommodation suppliers in Africa, the Middle East and the Indian Ocean islands. Users on the site must register and create a personal profile to book or rent out their accommodation. Each accommodation option is associated with a host who can be reviewed by previous guests.[1] HistorySleepOut was founded in December 2011 on Lamu Island, Kenya and is now headquartered in Port Louis, Mauritius. The company was created by Canadian hospitality marketeer, Johann Jenson and Kenyan digital entrepreneur, Mikul Shah.[2] The company was initially bootstrapped and in May 2013 was funded by Dutch venture capital firm, Africa Media Ventures Fund (AMVF).[3] Zimbabwean software engineer Paul Schwarz later joined the founding team in June 2013.[4] At the time of their beta launch in June 2012, the platform listed 1500 properties for rent throughout East Africa.[5] In March 2013, the company launched NOMAD, an online travel and lifestyle magazine.[6] Towards the end of 2013, the company released a user-generated platform offering 3000 accommodation options in 32 countries across Africa, the Middle East and the Indian Ocean islands.[7] References1. ^{{cite web |url=http://smileandmobile.com/2014/01/30/meet-the-airbnb-of-africa-sleepout-com/ |title=Meet the Airbnb of Africa: SleepOut.com |work=Smile & Mobile|accessdate=February 12, 2014}} 2. ^{{cite web |url=http://www.humanipo.com/news/507/Eatoutcoke-founders-all-set-to-launch-a-travel-site-Sleepoutcoke |title=Eat Out founders all set to launch travel site - SleepOut |work=HumanIPO|accessdate=April 12, 2013}} 3. ^{{cite web |url=https://vc4africa.biz/blog/2013/05/22/vc4africa-members-johann-jenson-and-mikul-shah-raise-us200000-in-seed-funding-for-sleepout-com |title=VC4Africa members Johann Jenson & Mikul Shah raise US$ 200,000 in seed funding |work=VC4Africa|accessdate=May 26, 2013}} 4. ^{{cite web |url=http://www.pr.com/press-release/495390 |title=SleepOut.com Appoints Paul Schwarz as Chief Technical Officer |work=PR.com|accessdate=June 6, 2013}} 5. ^{{cite web |url=http://techmoran.com/2013/04/19/ceo-weekends-sleepouts-johann-jenson-on-handling-over-150000-visitors-monthly-their-next-big-thing|title=SleepOut's Johann Jenson on handling over 150,000 visitors and their next big thing |work=TechMoran|accessdate=April 21, 2013}} 6. ^{{cite web |url=http://ventureburn.com/2013/05/sleepout-raises-200-000-seed-funding-launches-online-travel-mag/ |title=SleepOut raises $200,000 seed funding, launches online travel mag |work=ventureburn|accessdate=May 26, 2013}} 7. ^{{cite web |url=http://edition.cnn.com/2014/01/14/business/14-african-startups-to-watch-in-2014/index.html|title=15 African technology startups to watch in 2014 |work=CNN|accessdate=February 12, 2014}} External links
