He played representative level rugby union (RU) for South of Scotland, and at club level for Hawick RFC,[3] and selected to play representative level rugby league (RL) for Great Britain (no appearances), and at club level for Oldham and Coventry (no appearances), as a forward, e.g. {{rlp|pr|hk|sr}}, or {{rlp|lf}}, during the era of contested scrums. Playing careerInternational honoursTom Helm represented South of Scotland (RU) while at Hawick, and was selected for Great Britain (RL) while at Oldham for the 1910 Great Britain Lions tour of Australia and New Zealand.[4] However, a knee injury sustained prior to departing on the tour, was exacerbated by a tug of war competition with the passengers on-board the Peninsular and Oriental Steam Navigation Company (P&O) steamship SS Malwa, consequently he played no matches during the tour, and he would not play for Oldham until December 1910.[3] Club careerTom Helm's final match for Oldham took place against Runcorn in April of the 1910–11 Northern Rugby Football Union season, at the end of that season, along with other Oldham players, he signed for Coventry, but he does not appear to have played any matches for Coventry.[3] References1. ^{{cite web|url=http://www.rugbyleagueproject.org/players/tom-helm/summary.html|title=Statistics at rugbyleagueproject.org|publisher=rugbyleagueproject.org|date=31 December 2011|accessdate=1 January 2012}} 2. ^{{cite web|url=https://web.archive.org/web/19950000000000/http://www.englandrl.co.uk/player_records?search=McDermott&submit=Go&c=GB|title=Great Britain Statistics at englandrl.co.uk|publisher=englandrl.co.uk|date=31 December 2017|accessdate=1 January 2018}} 3. ^1 2 Tom Mather (2010).
