VanderbiltMetzger was a prominent guard for the Vanderbilt Commodores of Vanderbilt University from 1908 to 1911. Metzger was Dan McGugin's first great lineman.[1] Metzger was selected for an Associated Press Southeast Area All-Time football team 1869-1919 era.[2] Metzger was chosen for an all-time Vandy team in 1912,[3] as well as an All-time Vandy team published in Vanderbilt's yearbook in 1934. At Vanderbilt he was a member of the Kappa Alpha fraternity. 1909Metzger was injured in the loss to Ohio State in 1909, breaking his leg just above the knee.[4] 1910The 1910 team which tied defending national champion Yale[5] and allowed just 8 points and scored 165 was led by Metzger,[6] a unanimous All-Southern player and third-team All-American as chosen by Walter Camp.[7] He was the third ever player from the South to get on one of Camp's teams.[8] References1. ^{{cite web|url=http://www.dothanfirst.com/media/lib/204/8/d/c/8dc53287-cc01-4aa0-a1e3-83cefe778bbf/14vanderbilt_guide.pdf|title=2014 Vanderbilt Commodores Football Media Guide|page=143}} {{Navboxes2. ^{{cite news|url=https://news.google.com/newspapers?nid=1891&dat=19690727&id=2eRGAAAAIBAJ&sjid=_f0MAAAAIBAJ&pg=2256,3526388|newspaper=Gadsden Times|date=July 27, 1969|title=All-Time Football Team Lists Greats Of Past, Present}} 3. ^{{cite book|url=https://books.google.com/books?id=2msmAQAAIAAJ&pg=PA56&lpg=PA56&dq=&source=bl&ots=BqjvwpRof7&sig=K_RIpjNI5TujmXF7NlaK2RbjrLw&hl=en&sa=X&ei=D8gjVIXcEcSRgwT71IH4Cw&ved=0CE8Q6AEwCA#v=onepage&q&f=false|title=Vanderbilt University Quarterly|volume=13|author=Vanderbilt University|page=56}} 4. ^{{cite news|url=https://www.newspapers.com/clip/2409702/the_atlanta_constitution/|work=Atlanta Constitution|title=Vandy Loses to Ohio State|date=November 14, 1909|page=4|accessdate=May 14, 2015|via=Newspapers.com}} {{Open access}} 5. ^{{Cite web|url = http://www.vucommodores.com/sports/m-footbl/spec-rel/110905aab.html|title = Commodores Shock Powerful Yale in 1910|date = November 9, 2005|accessdate = February 11, 2015|website = |publisher = |last = Traughber|first = Bill}} 6. ^{{cite book|url=https://books.google.com/books?id=RS4VAAAAQBAJ&pg=PA120&dq=w+e+metzger+vanderbilt&hl=en&sa=X&ei=aHcGVJIekcaCBNW-gLgJ&ved=0CCQQ6wEwAQ#v=onepage&q&f=false|title=Where Football Is King: A History of the SEC|author=Christopher J.
