They finished the 1985 season undefeated, as champions of the PCAA with a record of eleven wins and no losses and one tie (11–0–1, 7–0 PCAA). Fresno State earned their second Division I-A postseason bowl game after the 1985 season. They played the 20th ranked, Mid-American Conference (MAC) champion Bowling Green Falcons in the fifth annual California Bowl in Bulldog Stadium on December 18. The Bulldogs beat Bowling Green 51–7.
