BiographyNxusani-Mawela first experienced brewing at various family events where traditional beer, known as umqombothi, is often drunk.[2] She grew up in Butterworth[4] in the Eastern Cape and later went to the University of Pretoria where she earned a Bachelor's degree in microbiology.[2] Nxusani-Mawela then did a brewing internship at South African Breweries (SAB) for 18 months.[3] Later, she earned a diploma from the Institute of Brewing and Distilling[2] and then was certified as a trainer for the Institute, becoming the first black African to be accredited.
