Asia League Limited or simply as the Asia League, is the organizer of an offseason competition platform for club basketball in Asia. It hosts two basketball tournaments every year one in July which is called Summer Super 8 and one in September, The Terrific 12 both of which are held in Macao. Aside from the basketball tournaments, part of the activities that happen during the week-long events are Summer Super 8 Coaches’ Clinic and the Asia League Fest which happens during The Terrific 12 Tournament.

The Super 8 competition in 2017 was an off-season tournament which is recognized by FIBA.[1]

History

Some years before the inception of the Asia League, Asia League CEO Matt Beyer conceptualized the idea of creating a league in East and Southeast Asia given the lack of high-level international tournaments featuring basketball clubs in the region. He also taken into account the population in the region, about 2 billion, which he views as the potential market for a regional inter-club tournament. The Asia League is envisioned to be East Asian counterpart of the NBA's Las Vegas Summer League where professional teams from Asia could compete against each other with minimal conflict with their mother league's schedules.[1] There stated mission is to be able to organized basketball tournaments featuring club sides from top Asian leagues with the organizers naming the CBA (China), B.League (Japan), KBL (South Korea), PBA (Philippines), SBL (Chinese Taipei), and ABL.[2].

While the FIBA Asia Champions Cup which features teams from across the Asia already exists, the Asia League initially plans to focus in the East and Southeast Asia but the organizers plans to transition the league into 32-team tournament.[1]

The first tournament by Asia League was the Super 8: Macau Basketball Invitational[3] which was contested by eight teams in September 2017.[4] The organizers initially dubbed the tournament itself as the "Asia League" this lead to them having a legal dispute with FIBA over the name of the league due to the world sports body perceiving the tournament's branding to be in conflict with its own FIBA Asia Champions Cup. The dispute led to the renaming of the competition to "Super 8"[3] and the tournament was eventually recognized by FIBA. The inaugural Super 8 was won by the Chiba Jets of the Japanese B. League.[5]

Summer Super 8

Summer Super 8 is an annual tournament organized by Asia League collaboration with the Sports Bureau of Macao SAR Government which features 8 club teams from Asia Pacific. The event does not allow teams to field foreign imports. The tournament is intended by the organizers as "a new platform for coaches and teams to develop youth talent and strengthen their rosters".[6]

The 2018 event was held at the Macao East Asian Games Dome from 17-22 July, with Guangzhou Long Lions from CBA taking the title over the Seoul Samsung Thunders with a final score of 78-72. Ju Minxin was named the tournament MVP scoring 25 points on 10-of-14 shooting from the field to go along with five rebounds in the championship game. Incheon Electroland Elephants placed third after defeating the NLEX Road Warriors 67-62 in the Semifinal Match-up.[7]

The tournament hosted eight of Asia’s top teams: Xinjiang Guanghui Flying Tigers and Guangzhou Long Lions from CBA (China), ETLAND Elephants and Seoul Samsung Thunders from KBL (South Korea), Blackwater Elite and NLEX Road Warriors from PBA (Philippines), Rizing Zephyr Fukuoka from B.League (Japan), and Formosa Dreamers from ABL .[8]

The Terrific 12

The tournament is organized in collaboration with the Sports Bureau of Macao SAR Government as well. Unlike Summer Super 8, The Terrific 12 allows the fielding of up to two foreign imports per team.[9]

The Terrific 12 was held at Macau’s Studio City Event Center from 18 -23 September with the Ryukyu Golden Kings taking home the crown over the defending Summer Super 8 Champions, Guangzhou Long-lions with a final score of 85-76. Ryukyu Guard Ryuchi Kishimoto was named MVP of the Terrific 12 finals game finishing with a team-high 21 points going for 6 of 9 from three. Seoul Samsung Thunders placed third in the tournament defeating the Nagoya Diamond Dolphins 105-92 in the Semifinal game.[10]
