The community is located near the center of the Bighorn Basin with the Big Horn River east of the town. Basin's post office, built in 1919, is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. GeographyBasin is located at {{Coord|44|22|44|N|108|2|35|W|type:city}} (44.378777, -108.043100).[5] According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of {{convert|2.43|sqmi|sqkm|2}}, of which, {{convert|2.40|sqmi|sqkm|2}} of it is land and {{convert|0.03|sqmi|sqkm|2}} is water.[6] Basin is known as The Lilac City. Basin hosts the Big Horn County Fair each summer. ClimateBasin has a cold desert climate (Köppen climate classification BWk). The town had the highest temperature ever recorded in Wyoming, {{convert|115|F|C}}, on August 8, 1983,[7] and also holds the state record high temperatures for April ({{convert|93|F|C|1|disp=or}} in 1948) and July ({{convert|114|F|C|1|disp=or}} in 1900).[8] In general, the eastern portion of the Bighorn Basin is hotter than the rest of Wyoming during the summer months.[9] Due to frequent low humidity, daily temperature ranges are large, whilst due to the very dry conditions snowfall is among the lightest in the northern Rockies and Plains region – it is not uncommon for no measurable precipitation to fall in a month between September and April. There are an average of 50.9 days annually with highs of {{convert|90|F|C}} or higher and an average of 186.0 nights with lows of {{convert|32|F|C}} or lower. The all-time record low for Basin was {{convert|-51|F|C}} on January 30, 1951. The wettest calendar year in Basin was 2005 with {{convert|10.43|in|mm}} and the driest 1902 with {{convert|2.63|in|mm}}. The most precipitation in one month was {{convert|4.56|in|mm}} in June 1967. The most precipitation in 24 hours was {{convert|2.23|in|mm}} on June 29, 1909. The most snowfall in one season was {{convert|38.50|in|m}} between July 1958 and June 1959, whilst the most snow in one month was {{convert|23.0|in|m}} during September 1984.[10] {{Weather box|location = Basin, Wyoming |single line = Y |Jan record high F = 64 |Feb record high F = 73 |Mar record high F = 82 |Apr record high F = 93 |May record high F = 99 |Jun record high F = 110 |Jul record high F = 112 |Aug record high F = 115 |Sep record high F = 102 |Oct record high F = 91 |Nov record high F = 77 |Dec record high F = 67 |year record high F= |Jan high F = 27.4 |Feb high F = 37.6 |Mar high F = 51.0 |Apr high F = 61.6 |May high F = 71.4 |Jun high F = 82.4 |Jul high F = 89.8 |Aug high F = 88.6 |Sep high F = 76.3 |Oct high F = 62.5 |Nov high F = 43.1 |Dec high F = 30.6 |Jan mean F = 14.6 |Feb mean F = 24.0 |Mar mean F = 37.0 |Apr mean F = 47.2 |May mean F = 56.9 |Jun mean F = 66.7 |Jul mean F = 72.9 |Aug mean F = 71.1 |Sep mean F = 59.4 |Oct mean F = 47.2 |Nov mean F = 30.7 |Dec mean F = 18.3 |Jan low F = 1.7 |Feb low F = 10.3 |Mar low F = 23.0 |Apr low F = 32.7 |May low F = 42.3 |Jun low F = 50.9 |Jul low F = 56.0 |Aug low F = 53.5 |Sep low F = 42.4 |Oct low F = 31.8 |Nov low F = 18.2 |Dec low F = 5.9 |Jan record low F = −43 |Feb record low F = −41 |Mar record low F = −25 |Apr record low F = 5 |May record low F = 18 |Jun record low F = 30 |Jul record low F = 39 |Aug record low F = 27 |Sep record low F = 16 |Oct record low F = −1 |Nov record low F = −18 |Dec record low F = −45 |year record low F = −45 |precipitation colour = green |Jan precipitation inch = 0.25 |Feb precipitation inch = 0.16 |Mar precipitation inch = 0.33 |Apr precipitation inch = 0.71 |May precipitation inch = 1.30 |Jun precipitation inch = 1.00 |Jul precipitation inch = 0.60 |Aug precipitation inch = 0.44 |Sep precipitation inch = 0.81 |Oct precipitation inch = 0.61 |Nov precipitation inch = 0.28 |Dec precipitation inch = 0.28 |Jan snow inch = 4.1 |Feb snow inch = 2.5 |Mar snow inch = 2.3 |Apr snow inch = 1.3 |May snow inch = 0.1 |Jun snow inch = 0.0 |Jul snow inch = 0.0 |Aug snow inch = 0.0 |Sep snow inch = 0.3 |Oct snow inch = 0.6 |Nov snow inch = 2.1 |Dec snow inch = 4.0 |Jan precipitation days = 3.0 |Feb precipitation days = 2.2 |Mar precipitation days = 2.7 |Apr precipitation days = 4.6 |May precipitation days = 6.5 |Jun precipitation days = 5.9 |Jul precipitation days = 3.6 |Aug precipitation days = 3.4 |Sep precipitation days = 4.6 |Oct precipitation days = 3.1 |Nov precipitation days = 3.0 |Dec precipitation days = 3.2 |unit precipitation days = 0.01 inch |Jan snow days = 2.7 |Feb snow days = 1.8 |Mar snow days = 1.7 |Apr snow days = 0.7 |May snow days = 0.05 |Jun snow days = 0.0 |Jul snow days = 0.0 |Aug snow days = 0.0 |Sep snow days = 0.2 |Oct snow days = 0.2 |Nov snow days = 1.5 |Dec snow days = 2.5 |unit snow days = 0.1 inch |source 1= NOAA (normals, 1971–2000) [11] |source 2 = Weather.com;[12] InfoPlease[8] (April and July record highs) |date=April 2011}} Demographics{{US Census population|1910= 763 |1920= 1088 |1930= 903 |1940= 1099 |1950= 1220 |1960= 1319 |1970= 1145 |1980= 1349 |1990= 1180 |2000= 1238 |2010= 1285 |estyear=2017 |estimate=1293 |estref=[13] |footnote=U.S. Decennial Census[14] }} 2010 censusAs of the census[15] of 2010, there were 1,285 people, 520 households, and 333 families residing in the town.
