It is {{convert|17|mi}} north of Greenville in north-central Hunt County, and was settled in the 1860s or 1870s when J. Pinckney Wolfe built a mill near the banks of Oyster Creek. The population was 1,412 at the 2010 census,[3] down from 1,566 at the 2000 census.[4] GeographyWolfe City is located near the northern border of Hunt County at {{coord|33.367996|-96.070430|type:city_region:US|format=dms|display=inline}} (33.367996, -96.070430).[5] State Highway 34 runs through the center of town as Santa Fe Street, leading northeast {{convert|21|mi}} to Honey Grove and south {{convert|17|mi}} to Greenville, the Hunt county seat. State Highway 11 crosses Highway 34 in the northern part of Wolfe City, and runs northwest {{convert|23|mi}} to Whitewright and southeast {{convert|13|mi}} to Commerce. The population density was 1,085.3 people per square mile (419.9/km2). There were 687 housing units at an average density of 476.1 per square mile (184.2/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 83.40% White, 13.09% African American, 1.02% Native American, 0.32% Asian, 0.06% Pacific Islander, 0.32% from other races, and 1.79% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 3.38% of the population. There were 615 households out of which 34.5% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 47.5% were married couples living together, 15.4% had a female householder with no husband present, and 32.7% were non-families. 30.1% of all households were made up of individuals and 16.4% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.46 and the average family size was 3.03. In the city, the population was spread out with 27.8% under the age of 18, 8.2% from 18 to 24, 28.0% from 25 to 44, 16.5% from 45 to 64, and 19.5% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 35 years. For every 100 females, there were 86.9 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 76.4 males. The median income for a household in the city was $26,786, and the median income for a family was $37,692. Males had a median income of $28,462 versus $19,336 for females. The per capita income for the city was $13,317. About 16.5% of families and 19.2% of the population were below the poverty line, including 25.2% of those under age 18 and 19.9% of those age 65 or over.
