He immigrated to Mandate Palestine at the age of 17. He enlisted in the British Army during the Second World War and served in the Jewish Brigade. He served in the Israel Defense Forces during the Israeli War of Independence. After the war he served in the regular army. He studied philosophy and Hebrew literature at Tel Aviv University. His first book Wild Grass was published in 1959. AwardsIn 2005, Orpaz was awarded the Israel Prize for literature.[2] See also
