LifeMclenden was born in Minden, Louisiana in 1924. She was brought up in Detroit, Michigan, where she attended Cass Technical High School, she then attended A & I State University in Tennessee, where she earned a BSc in biology. After post-graduate study in universities including Purdue, she taught in public schools in Phoenix, Arizona and Eldorado, Arkansas.
